I have about $14,000 in credit card debt. It is the total debt from two credit cards with balances of nearly $7,000 each.
Can I qualify for a personal loan? Where should I seek this out? I was thinking of trying my local bank.
I do not own a home. I work part time. Other than the credit card debt, I have no other credit issues. Even my car is paid for.
My balances in my checking and savings accounts are pretty meager. I do have an IRA account that I transferred to the bank when I left my last job of about $30,000.
Would a bank be the place to go for a personal loan for me in my situation? What other financial organizations might be able to help? What about a savings and loan organization? Or what about what is commonly known as a “loan shark”? What are the risks of taking out a loan with a loan shark?

Actually i went to seek admission in a institute. There Fees was 90,000 rupees + service tax. So they told me to give 22,000 rupees as a security deposit. So I gave them two cheque of 10,000 & 12,000 dated 26/3/11 & 30/3/11 respectively. As i was going for a personal loan for payment of remaining 70,000. At the time of admission Regional Head told me that you would be given time for the payment of remaining 70,000 and you would be allowed for the tuitions starting from 30th March.
But on 29th March they are telling you won’t be allowed to sit for the lectures before paying the entire fees. Because of this i took a decision to cancel the admission from the institute. So just to save my 22,000 i stopped the payment of both the cheque. Today i got a notice from my Bank for dishonoured cheque. Please help me out. Can the institute take action against me. What can i do if the institute sends me any notice.

Several years ago I embraced the philosophy of voluntary simplicity. I also try to make every possible effort to practice a lifestyle that is environmentally sustainable and socially conscious. I am currently pursuing an aggressive plan to pay off all of my debts, mostly student loans and home loans, to live debt free – even to be virtually self reliant if I had to or wanted to. While I don’t need a whole lot of money since I don’t spend much on luxuries, I do want to earn near the peak compensation levels for my occupation and location – more money now pays debt of faster!
My current position straddles the fence between engineering and sales. My problem is that I am being paid much less than the market average (based on salary surveys and certain salary oriented websites), and I think it might be tied to the fact that my peers wear expensive clothes, drive expensive cars, and talk about their expensive lifestyles at the water cooler. I have an “interesting” life, but definitely not “conventional” – as I am a single father (mother haabandoneded our kids), and I spend my weekends on “Green” projects, such as building rainwater harvesting systems for my home and growing my own organic vegetables – so sometimes I do “miss the game” since I’m in my yard with my kids and not in front of my TV. I don’t have any “bing” to flash and don’t want to. I don’t expend any effort on stamp collecting, breeding Pomeranians, or any other pompous, impractical BS – though I usually don’t express my disdain for such nonsense outside of my home, since I know most people don’t share my views.
My clothing is business appropriate, but I think I may have confessed too often in public that I buy my shirts at Goodwill for $3 each (they fit well with no wrinkles, holes, or stains). Until now I never thought I should be ashamed of my simple lifestyle or try to conceal it, but there are many books about career success and getting promoted that indicate that one should wear more expensive suits, keep a gold plated pen in one’s pocket, and brandish a Rolex to make it clear to managers, colleagues, and clients how “successful” one is so one will be remembered at decision time. Is my simple lifestyle such a threat to today’s “Management Class” to keep me pinned down in my current position at relatively low pay? Do you think my lifestyle could come across as a rebuke of their own “hedonism” (though I would never describe them as such)? I don’t drink alcohol, use tobacco, use drugs, fornicate, or even drink coffee, so could this be a part of the problem as well? I’ve always been able to hold my own in any conversation, whether business oriented, intellectual, or just small talk. I tend to make people feel good and people of all backgrounds seem to like to be around me and come to my office for a quick chat, so I don’t think I’m coming across as too pretentious or any kind of “better-than-thou” sort of person. Any suggestions?

So far I have gotten into;
Umass Amherst-undeclared- I am a resident so it will be 9,500 for tuition before costs-did not get into the nursing program-it is near impossible to switch into
University of New Hampshire-going to be about 21,000 tuition before other cost’s-Did not get into the occupational therapy program/nursing but slightly easier to switch into
West Virginia University-going to be about 17,000 before other cost’s but I received 13,000 for the four years to go there (about 3,250 per year)- Accepted into a Pre-Occupational Therapy Program that prepares you to enter Occupational Therapy major your sophomore year.
University of Rhode Island- 27,000 a year before costs- Did not get accepted into a program.
Endicott College- 26,000 before costs- all students apply to programs like nursing sophomore year so there is still a chance I get in.
I believe most of my Financial aid is about a little more or less 6,000$ in fed loans and about 6,000 in fed grants.
Open Question: Do I have to file taxes if I don’t have a job but I get Financial Aid to pay for college?

I’m an 18-year-old college freshman. I have almost no money left because my father passed away in 2008 and my mom is no longer employed, so I had to pay for all of college with financial aid – loans, scholarships, and grants. I have like $100 left in the bank because this year I had personal expenses like food and a few clothing items.
Do I still have to file taxes? I don’t know how to if I only have $100. Can I file an extension or something? I really don’t understand taxes at all and I would really appreciate some help.
I can’t be considered a dependent because my mom contributes no money to my education (because she’s financially unable) but I used a little under $8,000 to pay for room and board. I understand room and board is taxable but that all other financial aid isn’t? That was my understanding. I think it was about $7,900.
Okay, what about this… I had a job for the first half of the year. On my W-2 the number listed under “Wages, tips, other compensation” is $2,179.81. Would this be added to my $7,900? That would take me over $10,000…
I’m sorry, let me just add one more thing… I got loans totaling over $8,900, which I could have used to pay for room and board. (It all went into one bank account so it’s not like I had different scholarships/grants/loans each for different bills.) Since I could say that my loans went to room and board and my grants/scholarships paid for tuition, books, etc., would I not have to file?

Open Question: The Pump Shotgun Racking Sound and "Are Criminals Basically Cowards"?

I think I have heard about a gazillion times that all criminals know the sound of a pump action racking back and forth, and it terrorizes all criminals.
I sort of tend to doubt that. If you are the average gang member who lives in a large city like Los Angeles, you have probably never gone hunting in your life, and probably don’t know the shotgun racking sound. It’s not that distinctive. And cops in Los Angeles, only take the shotgun out on felony stops. Most people haven’t heard it that much. My family would go dove hunting every year down near the Mexican border with our Ithaca Model 37’s, and so I grew up hearing that sound. I know for a fact, that my next door neighbor, Eddie, who became a hard core gang member, never went shooting or hunting, and didn’t have any experience with guns, except for the guns his gang would loan to him.
My personal belief is NOT that the shotgun racking sound scares criminals. My view is THE PRESENCE OF A GUN SCARES CRIMINALS.
I have spent my entire life (except for the Army) in lousy neighborhoods in Los Angeles, and I am a tiny, skinny little man who looks weak. I carry a .25 auto.
Criminals constantly look at me like a lion looks at a steak. I worked my way through college, mainly as a waiter in West Hollywood, so that meant lots of time on bus stops in Hollywood (for those of you who don’t know Hollywood, it is a LOUSY, DANGEROUS neighborhood at night. I would get off work at the restaurant past midnight and have to wait for my transfer in some terrible scary spot. I bought a nickel plated Raven .25 off a junkie in my building for $40. I can’t tell you how many times that Raven got me out of a jam. I flashed it and suddenly the creeps and thugs had something else they really had to do. I believe that criminals always want to make the cheap and easy score. They see a gun, suddenly, they have lost interest.
Do you agree with this? That criminals are basically cowards and flee the presence of a gun?
